From Eckart and Young approximation to Moreau envelopes and vice versa
In matricial analysis, the theorem of Eckart & Young provides a best approximation of an arbitrary matrix by a matrix of rank at most r. In variational analysis or optimization, the Moreau envelopes are appropriate ways of approximating or regularizing the rank function. We prove here that we can go forwards and backwards between the two procedures, thereby showing that they carry essentially t...
متن کاملThe Approximation of One Matrix by Another of Lower Rank Carl Eckart and Gale Young
The mathematical problem of approximating one matrix by another of lower rank is closely related to the fundamental postulate of factor-theory. When formulated as a least-squares problem, the normal equations cannot be immediately written do~vn, since the elements of the approximate matrix are not independent of one another. The solution of the problem is simplified by first expressing the matr...
متن کاملSUPER- AND SUB-ADDITIVE ENVELOPES OF AGGREGATION FUNCTIONS: INTERPLAY BETWEEN LOCAL AND GLOBAL PROPERTIES, AND APPROXIMATION
Super- and sub-additive transformations of aggregation functions have been recently introduced by Greco, Mesiar, Rindone and v{S}ipeky [The superadditive and the subadditive transformations of integrals and aggregation functions, {it Fuzzy Sets and Systems} {bf 291} (2016), 40--53]. In this article we give a survey of the recent development regarding the existence of aggregation functions with ...
متن کاملReliable and Efficient Approximation of Polyconvex Envelopes
An iterative algorithm that approximates the polyconvex envelope f pc of a given function f : R → R, i.e. the largest function below f which is convex in all minors, is established. A rigorous error analysis with a focus on reliability and optimal orders of convergence, an efficient strategy that reduces the large number of unknowns, as well as numerical experiments are presented.
متن کاملFrom numbers to Numerals and Vice Versa
Universally used decimal representations, such as 5; 200; 856763; 189200000 are rendered (written, pronounced) differently in different languages. The number 5 is tllus five in English, fern in Swedish, cinq in French, ketsmala in Koyukon, biyar in Hausa and nga: in Burmese. Numbers can furthermore be written differently in different mathematical systems. The number 5 is written V in the Roman ...
